Ten Important Steps
In 1728 Caleb Phillips advertised private correspondence courses in shorthand in the Boston Gazette. This is the first recorded instance of distance learning.
In 1858 The University of London became the first university to offer distance learning degrees.
In 1969 Harold Wilson’s Labour Government founded the Open University. It became the first institution to deliver only distance learning, primarily using radio and television broadcasts to deliver content.
In the 1980’s “Web-based training” developers rode the heels of early computer graphics software and affordable personal computers, authoring programs on CD-ROMs and floppy disks that could be consumed at any time with a computer.
In the 1990’s the Internet connected learners and educators at the speed of fiber optic cables. Content shared through email, early websites and bulletin board systems democratized information as never before.
In 1995 Arnold Pizer and Michael Gage developed WeBWork, a Perl-based system for delivering homework problems over the web.
In 2005 social media accelerated the pace of communication making learning faster and extending its reach around the globe.
In 2007 smarter, smaller and more portable devices make learning content accessible and social connections possible from the sidewalk, factory floor or conference room.
In 2009 Online education sector grew 13% from the last year and had been growing 20% in previous years.
In 2009 President Barack Obama pledged $500 million for online courses and materials.
